I haven’t really been a “movie watcher” in my life. Sure, I’ve seen my fair share of movies, and I’ve got my favorites, including Back to the Future, Ace Ventura, Terminator 2, among others. Growing up I never really “got into” movies, I was a video games kid. Sure, I watched stuff, but I was never really into them except my absolute favorites.
Lately I’m discovering some good ones I’ve never seen. The Terminator, for instance. I’ve always loved Terminator 2, in fact it was one of the first DVDs I bought (along with Toy Story 1 and 2 in a double pack – talk about contrast in movies), however I had never seen Terminator 1, even though I’ve had it for about six months. I saw it the other day and I thought it was really good. I then watched T2 and I got a lot more out of it because I had the plot down from the first one.
Another one I saw for the first time this past week was The Shining. Even though I had never seen it I had the basics of the plot down – Jack Nicholson grows progressively mad – and expected some key scenes like Wendy fighting Jack off with the bat, being locked in the pantry, the elevators of blood, etc mainly because I’ve seen so many shows to parodies of it, including The Simpsons and Rocko’s Modern Life.
Anyway, I found the movie fascinating. I’ve read that some people just don’t “get” why it’s scary, but man, this movie was pretty damn terrifying at a mental level – not a “gore, gore, chop chop, shoot shoot” kind of way – and I think I’m going to look more into the genre.
I’ve had Netflix for years but lately I’ve just been sending everything back after keeping it for weeks. I think I’m going to load up on some good movies and actually watch them. I’ve got a lot of movies that I need to see that are just part of our culture, and normally I don’t feel this way, but I feel left out!
