Radio-Locator

Site of the Moment

In this world of HDTV, high speed internet, cell phones with internet access, satellite radio and podcasts, sometimes it’s nice to just listen to good ‘ol terrestrial radio. And while it may be obvious, there are still quite a few stations out there. That’s where Radio-Locator.com comes in. Just put your zip code (or the zip code you may be visiting) in and you’ll get a listing of all the radio stations in the area, but AM and FM.

But the listings isn’t the only thing on this site. It also links to the stations’ websites and even has some streams. So if you’d like to listen to a station in LA but are in NY, but maybe you don’t know the website or the call letters, just visit Radio-Locator and they can hook you up.

This is a nice little site that can come in handy at times for a possibly dying (through evolution) breed of entertainment.

Have you ever come across a site that you would like access to but don’t want to give a real e-mail address because you don’t want to get spammed? Then try out GuerrillaMail! Just click “Get temporary e-mail” and you’re taken to a page with an e-mail address which will run out within 15 minutes, unless you click “Give me 15 more Minutes”, which you can do as-needed.

Just remember that once it expires you can’t get any mail on that account again.

Online World of Wrestling

Site of the Moment

Any self-respecting wrestling fan owes it to themselves to know about the Online World of Wrestling. Formerly Obsessed with Wrestling, changing after a dispute over the domain, Online World of Wrestling is THE one-stop site for wrestling information. Profiles, galleries, results, rosters, you name it it’s likey on this site! It is quite the treasure-trove of wrestling-related information.

ps. i’ll find my frog

Site of the Moment

I found ps. i’ll find my frog a few years ago and I still get a big laugh out of it. It’s lost frog poster that an Autistic boy posted around his neighborhood and got noticed on the internet. It has now spawned a bunch of Photoshop that are just hilarious.

CreativeCommons Search

Site of the Moment

If you like image manipulating, music editing, and a slew of other things where you would like to use something, especially commercially, the Search.CreativeCommons.org is for you. I believe it’s even built-into the Firefox search box.

This search site, run by CreativeCommons, filters search results from a number of sources including Flickr, Yahoo! and Google to only show pages/images/music files which are covered under a CreativeCommons license. This means that, depending on the license (there are a few different types) you can edit, modify and/or redistribute commercially or otherwise the content you search for. I have started using this search and it’s a really nice tool to have.

Google Usenet Archive

Site of the Moment

This page has been up for a long time and I love going back to it again and again. Simply put, the 20 Year Usenet Archive is a collection of links to major “first” topics in the Usenet network.

The page ranges from May 11, 1981 – the first article Google had in the archive (which has unfortunately been deleted for some reason) through September 11, 2001. There are so many interesting/funny discussions here, ranging from the first mention of the Fax Machine to the first post from an AOL account.

Unfortunately the first half or so doesn’t have many active links, but this is still a fun page to read through.

OldVersion.com

Site of the Moment

Sometimes, you may upgrade a piece of software, or need software that you had a while ago, and you don’t like the new version for whatever reason. Or maybe you’re even running on an old version of Windows and need an older version of some software. That’s where OldVersion.com comes in.

OldVersion.com has tons of older versions of software, ranging from AIM, Ad-Aware, WS_FTP and a ton of other things. This is a great resource if you’re stuck in your old ways or are running older operating systems.

Media Convert

Link of the Moment

Sometimes, when you’re surfing the web, you may see a video, image, audio or other type of file but need it in another format – for example, you want to download a .wmv but as an .avi. That’s where Media Convert comes in.

Media Convert allows you upload a file or import it from the web (via the URL option) and re-encode any file into any other type of file. For example, you know the direct URL to a YouTube video (which can be easily found with a Firefox addon such as VideoDownloader) but want it in .wmv format for easy editing. Just get that URL, paste it into the input box and choose “.

Like I said, it also has an upload option, but depending on your upload speed it will likely take a much longer time to upload/convert/download than the URL method.

Test Your Firewall

Site of the Moment

Today’s Site of the Moment is a great tool to make sure your computer is safe (from incoming traffic). Hackerwatch.org’s Firewall Tester scans your network/computer to make sure that it’s safe from outside prying eyes. The site won’t tell you if you’re safe from traffic from within your PC (for example, from a virus), but it’s a nice site to visit to test out firewall settings and whatnot.

The site has two options, a Simple Probe, and a Ports Scan. The Ports Scan is much more thorough than the Simple Probe. Personally, when I use it, I do both. The Port Scan can take a little while, but it’s worth seeing how protected you are.

Free Image Hosting

Site(s) of the Moment

Sometimes, when you’re on a message forum, MySpace, or even email you want to embed an image from the internet or your computer. Unfortunately, there is a growing number of sites out there which use hotlink protection which either completely stops the image from being shown or replaces it with another image. And they use this protection with good reason, since bandwidth costs money and leeching drives up that cost.

When you run into this problem, here are a few sites which will help you host your images.

Photobucket
This one you may have heard of. This is the best site if you plan to keep an ongoing album/archive of pictures, graphics and what have you. You can just upload any image into any number of albums and link to them. The codes are all there, and there are some neat tools, too, including uploading from a direct URL (so you don’t have to save the image to your hard drive first), cropping and slide shows. This site requires a login and does have a limit on bandwidth and storage usage, though it’s unlikely you’ll run into problems.

Flickr
Another one you likely have heard of. Flickr is the best site for your photographs (and graphics). Like Photobucket, it’s great for albums. But it also has a large community, so you can share your photos with groups, chat with people, and, of course, link to your photos. Flickr also requires a login.

ImageShack
Finally, there’s ImageShack. ImageShack has the advantage over both Flickr and Photobucket in that it doesn’t require a login. You can upload an image from the web or your computer, get the code for it and post it wherever you want. There are also options for resizing, cropping, using thumbnails, etc.

These sites I find very useful and recommend using at least one of them for your image-hosting needs.
